 My writing came about as a result
of thirty years of my avocation: interviewing Adirondack natives. Collecting on recording
tape their personal, lasting memories that were fading into history as each native died.
Collecting vintage photographs and other primary sources of information -- journals,
letters and post cards. My writing is more a product of a storyteller -- reconstructing
lives -- than that of a bland historian. I have always enjoyed histories that focus on
people and their stories. Often by spending time with my subjects they became very dear
friends to me, and I will show you the door through which you can immerse yourself in our
relationships. |

| Following years of lecturing and guiding
on what I knew best on Adirondack history for Adirondack Discovery, the Adirondack
Mountain Club, the Adirondack Museum, the Association for the Protection of the
Adirondacks, Sagmore Institute, the nonprofit Adirondack Great Camp at Raquette Lake and
various other organizations, I decided the only true way to preserve the stories,
recollections and heritage, as well as keep alive my friend's memories for the next
generation, who otherwise wouldn't know of their contributions and way of life in enough
passion and detail to permanently record it. |
| My first book Life With Noah: Stories and
Adventures of Richard Smith with Noah John Rondeau by William J. O'Hern First edition Hard
Cover is out-of-print. is about an old friend Richard Smith and his friendship with the
Adirondack's last (and legendary) hermit. Like Richard Smith's quiet perseverance
and Noah Rondeau's famous exploits, there is no stopping me now. My second book, The
Adirondack World of A. L. Byron-Curtiss, the Renegade Reverend of North Lake is currently
being readied for publication by North Country Books, Inc. With boxes and boxes full of
family histories and photographs, I am working on my third book, part of a series of books
on the Adirondacks and its inhabitants. |
